How to Study Psychology: Theories, Studies, and Terms That Stick

Psychology looks like an easy A from the outside. The lectures are full of interesting stories about obedience experiments and dogs that drool at the sound of a bell, and the readings feel more like magazine articles than math problems. Then the first exam arrives, and students discover that psychology courses demand something specific: precise recall of hundreds of terms, the ability to match dozens of researchers to their studies, and the skill to apply abstract theories to messy real-world scenarios. Every experiment-as-story has the same beats:
- The question: What did the researcher want to know, and why then? Milgram was motivated by the question of how ordinary people participated in atrocities during World War II.
- The setup: What did participants think was happening? In Milgram's study, they believed they were helping with a learning experiment and administering shocks to a "learner" in another room.
- The twist: What was really going on? The learner was a confederate, the shocks were fake, and the real subject of study was the "teacher" pressing the switches.
- The result: What happened, and why was it surprising? A majority of participants continued to the maximum voltage when prompted by the experimenter, far more than experts had predicted.
- The aftermath: What did the field learn, and what pushback followed? Debates about ethics, demand characteristics, and how far the findings generalize.
When you encode a study in this five-beat structure, exam questions become easy because any detail you are asked about slots into a plot point you already know. It also protects you from the most common experiment-related error: mixing up which researcher did what. Asch and Milgram blur together as "social influence people" if you learn them as facts, but the stories are completely different: one is about lines on a card and going along with a group, the other is about an authority figure in a lab coat urging you to continue.
To test whether you truly know a study, explain it out loud to someone who has never taken psychology, using the five beats and no notes. This is essentially the Feynman technique applied to experiments, and the places where your explanation stumbles are exactly the gaps to review.
Apply Concepts to Your Own Life
Here is one of the most reliable psychology study tips: for every concept you learn, generate one example from your own life. Memory researchers call the underlying effect the self-reference effect; information related to yourself is processed more deeply and remembered better than information studied abstractly.
In practice:
- Classical conditioning: the specific song that instantly puts you back in a summer two years ago, or the way the smell of a hospital makes you tense.
- Negative reinforcement: putting on your seatbelt to silence the car's beeping. The behavior increases because it removes an unpleasant stimulus.
- Confirmation bias: the last time you searched online specifically for evidence that a purchase you had already made was a good decision.
- Fundamental attribution error: assuming the driver who cut you off is a jerk, while your own identical lane change last week was justified by being late.
- Cognitive dissonance: how you talked yourself into liking a class you could not drop.
Write these personal examples directly into your notes next to the formal definitions. On exam day, application questions describe a scenario and ask which concept it illustrates. - Sensation vs. perception: sensation is raw input from sensory receptors; perception is the brain's organization and interpretation of that input.
- Proactive vs. retroactive interference: proactive means old learning disrupts new (your old locker code intrudes when recalling the new one); retroactive means new learning disrupts old.
- Assimilation vs. accommodation: assimilation fits new information into an existing schema; accommodation changes the schema to fit the information.
- Independent vs. dependent variable: the independent variable is what the researcher manipulates; the dependent variable is what is measured.
- Reliability vs. validity: reliability is consistency of a measure; validity is whether it measures what it claims to.
Do not study confusable terms separately, because that leaves the distinction untested. Make contrast cards: a flashcard whose front asks "negative reinforcement vs. punishment: what is the difference?" and whose back states the distinction plus one example of each. How to Read Research Papers and Methods Sections
Upper-level psychology courses assign primary research papers, and even intro courses increasingly excerpt them. Reading a journal article front to back like a novel is slow and unhelpful. Read it in this order instead:
- Abstract: the whole paper in one paragraph. Read it twice.
- End of the introduction: the specific hypotheses, usually stated in the final paragraphs before the method section.
- Discussion, first paragraphs: the authors' plain-language summary of what they found and what it means.
- Method: now go back and read how they actually did it.
- Results: last, once you know what you are looking for in the numbers.

- Who were the participants? A sample of forty undergraduates at one university limits how far the findings generalize.
- Was it a true experiment with random assignment, or a correlational design? Only the former supports causal claims.
- How were the variables operationalized? "Aggression" measured as hot sauce allocation is not the same as real-world violence.

- Was there a control group, and were experimenters blind to conditions?
Every answer to these questions is a potential evaluation point in an essay and a potential criticisms entry in your theorist table. Preparing for Multiple Choice vs. Essay Exams
Psychology exam prep should look different depending on the exam format, because the two formats test different skills.
Multiple choice exams
MCQ exams test recognition and fine discrimination. The wrong answers are rarely random; they are the confusable neighbors of the right answer. A question about negative reinforcement will offer punishment as a distractor. A question about Milgram will offer Asch and Zimbardo. This means MCQ prep is exactly the contrast-card work described above, plus volume: do as many practice questions as you can find, and for every question you miss, write down not just the right answer but why each distractor was wrong. Reviewing distractors teaches you the boundaries between concepts, which is what the next exam will probe.
Essay exams
Essay exams test structure and evaluation. A strong psychology essay answer typically follows a describe-evidence-evaluate rhythm: state the theory or claim, support it with a named study (researcher, method, finding), then evaluate with a criticism or a competing account. Practice by writing timed outlines rather than full essays: give yourself five minutes to sketch the skeleton of an answer to a likely question, listing which studies you would cite and which criticisms you would raise. Many students choose psychology hoping to escape math, then meet the research methods unit. Statistics anxiety leads people to skim these chapters, which is a mistake for two reasons: the material is heavily tested, and it is more conceptual than computational at the intro level. You will rarely calculate anything by hand. You need to understand ideas:
- Descriptive vs. inferential statistics: describing a sample vs. drawing conclusions about a population.
- Mean, median, and mode: and when a skewed distribution makes the median more informative than the mean.
- Standard deviation: as a measure of spread, and what a normal distribution implies about where scores fall.
- Correlation coefficients: what the sign and magnitude of r mean, and why correlation never establishes causation on its own.
- Statistical significance: what a p-value does and does not tell you, and why "significant" does not mean "large" or "important."
- Effect size: the answer to "how big is the difference," which significance alone cannot provide.
The best way to learn these is through the studies you are already memorizing. When your textbook says a result was significant, ask what the comparison was. When it reports a correlation, ask what third variable might explain it. Statistics stops being abstract the moment it becomes the tool you use to judge the experiments in your theorist table. And in essays, a well-placed methodological point about sample size or effect size reads as sophisticated evaluation.
A Semester-Long Study System
